Recruiting an In-House SEO

Oct 30th, 2011 Dave Edwards

The e-commerce business has grown even further than ever before in the past couple of years. Consumers are switched on to current online trends thanks to a proliferation of web enabled mobile devices and home electronics.

While this can present an opportunity for companies that are ready to take the next step, it doesn't mean that the process isn't fraught with obstacles. You may find it challenging to recruit an SEO or to conduct search engine optimisation in house or at your SEO agency.

Customise The Job Description And Job Role

Before you start drawing up job ad wording and creating the perfect advertisement you need to create a job description. The SEO job role is a lightly trodden path, at best, and so there are few clearly defined descriptions out there. You will be looking for somebody to fill an executive marketing role, however, and so degree qualifications are desirable, 2 years' experience, and a range of specialist knowledge and skills.

Salary Range And Benefits Package

Another problem with the SEO industry is that there is little information regarding standards SEO salaries but you should arguably expect to pay a top end 5 figure premium for the very top of the ladder in terms of skills, experience, and qualification. As with any recruitment campaign, the more you're willing to pay in salary the better the candidates you'll attract to apply for the role. The reverse is often true so if you pay less then expect less.

Finding Exposure For Your Job Ad

Once the description and job role have been written, you will need to decide how you will advertise the vacancy. A search engine is an obvious place to start advertising the job and you will need to decide whether to do all the promotional work yourself, which can be quite time consuming and may yield less than exceptional results, or use a recruitment agency; using a recruiter may cost considerably more but it will leave you to concentrate on running your business. Recruiters know their market and normally know where to start looking.

Preparing And Conducting The Interview

The Interview process is as important a step as any other so you need to be prepared. Consult your job description and write questions ready for the interviews. You may also ask each of the candidates to prepare a brief presentation before they arrive for their interview. Use a relevant presentation topic, such as how their experience helped a former company or website to benefit, or some of the advanced SEO techniques that they will bring with them.

Last but by no means least, always remember to look out for an SEO while likes a good test...
